In Sept of 2008, we traveled to New Jersey for the weekend. While there, we visited Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, Pa. These are my photos from that visit.
When the Eastern State Penitentiary opened on October 25, 1829 it was the world's most expensive and high-tech prison. This massive institution loomed over Philadelphia on a lonely hilltop. Its design unified the world's most advanced building technology with a radical new system of prisoner isolation.
The new prison caused a worldwide phenomenon. As governments began to copy the new prison, Eastern State Penitentiary became the most influential prison ever built. This
Link shows what the original layout of the prison looked like, with only 7 cell blocks. This
Link shows what the prison looked like before it closed down in 1971. At this time, there were 15 cell blocks, and no space between the 'spokes' to build anymore.
WARNING- There are 110 photos here. So if there's any dial up users, you have been warned.
