Calling all Gays and Lesbians and Bis, etc in Virginia

Several of you are my friends, so listen up..

The General Assembly is proposing an amendment to the Virginia Constitution. They want to ban gay marriage in the state of Virginia by making it a part of the constitution as well as the law that it already is.

When it comes time to vote this Nov, make yourselves heard loud and clear!

"On May 21, 2003, Rep. Marilyn Musgrove (R-Co) and five co-sponsors introduced HJ Resolution 56, a resolution to amend the U.S. Constitution to define marriage as between a man and a woman. Joining Musgrove as an original co-sponsor was Rep. Jo Ann Davis (R-VA1). Additionally, Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA7), Rep. Virgil Goode (R-VA5), and Edward Schrock (R-VA2) have joined as co-sponsors. As of August 4, 2003, the amendment has 75 bipartisan co-sponsors in the House of Representatives. There currently is no Senate companion bill.

  • The proposed Amendment reads:

Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this [C]onstitution [n]or the constitution of any state, nor state or federal law, shall be construed to require that marital status or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon unmarried couples or groups."

  • "On July 1, 2004 the Virginia Marriage Affirmation Act became law. In addition to prohibiting the recognition of same-sex marriages and civil unions, this legislation threatens to overturn private contractual relationships between gay and lesbian couples.

The full text of the act is:

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

    1. That the Code of Virginia is amended by adding a section numbered 20-45.3 as follows:

ยง 20-45.3. Civil unions between persons of same sex.

A civil union, partnership contract or other arrangement between persons of the same sex purporting to bestow the privileges or obligations of marriage is prohibited. Any such civil union, partnership contract or other arrangement entered into by persons of the same sex in another state or jurisdiction shall be void in all respects in Virginia and any contractual rights created thereby shall be void and unenforceable."

    Oh my gods.....

So I remembered that I had all this fabric, quilt papers, cross stitch stuff, downstairs in my pie safe cupboard.

So I started pulling it out....and pulling it out... and pulling it out....

Tomorrow I go to buy another 3 drawer caddy to store most of this in. Wow.
